Powerful Strategies for Teaching Readers | Andrea Hillbrick Event ID: 12512
As early childhood educators our aim is to inspire, support and nurture our students so that they develop identities as confident and engaged readers and thinkers.
AISWA invites you to join Andrea Hillbrick for an ongoing project focused on teaching engaged readers.
During the project you will have the opportunity to investigate:
• Hooks to engage readers
• Teaching Approaches that enable and extend readers
• Independent reading
• Reading Conferences
• Comprehension Strategies
• Learning experiences that motivate readers
• Effective use of mentor texts
Andrea will be available for mentoring and support, sharing with you a host of practical strategies that will provide your students with the will and skill to engage in reading and become meaning makers.
You will also receive a copy of The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo, a book of ‘reading recipes’ or strategies to support differentiated instruction and target specific literacy goals.

Clean Schools Workshops
Looking to engage students and reduce litter at your school?
Many schools experience difficulties managing litter and recognise the importance of a clean and healthy environment. Educating students about the effects of litter and influencing beliefs and attitudes are key steps towards behaviour change and litter reduction in the community as a whole. The Clean Schools program aims at changing the littering behaviour of students through a whole school approach to litter prevention and a range of resources to help.

The Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize
The Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize is back in 2020, and we’ve made two key changes.
All films must be 90 seconds in duration and based on this year’s theme ‘Water’.
The theme has been selected for its wide scope of interpretation – encouraging students to follow their curiosity and make a scientific splash in a short film!
The prize is open to primary and secondary school students in Australia, with homeschooled children also eligible to enter.
There’s a prize pool of $10,000 to be shared between the finalists and their schools, and representatives from finalist teams win a trip to Sydney for the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Award Dinner.
