Description

This course focuses on teaching decoding through the GUIDED READING component of your reading program. It provides an efficient routine that gets results.

This workshop provides participants with:

-The 5-bits routine that provides a simple instructional guide to teach decoding, and prepares students to transfer to more complex comprehension skills.
- an understanding of how learners begin to read and progress towards competent decoding
- an explicit, transferable routine for instruction, that empowers students and simplifies the work of teachers
- skills for keen observation and data collection to determine explicit teaching targeted at student needs
- a clear learning pathway for the teaching of reading and a transition from decoding to comprehending.

Set students up for success through embedding mental strategies for decoding text. Students internalise strong, transferable strategies to decode text across contexts through supported meaning and scaffolded word attack skills.

Part 1 will begin with getting the Decoding Strategy Instruction routine right, Part 2 will focus on data collection that informs explicit teaching.
