    ABOUT THE ROLE


    The Education Assistant Laboratory Technician plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of the Science curriculum across the Secondary School. This is primarily a technical role, responsible for ensuring all laboratory and science equipment is functional, well-maintained, and safe for intended use. The Technician also collaborates closely with the Science teaching staff to support lesson delivery, including experiment preparation, classroom safety, and student engagement. In addition, the Technician contributes to policy compliance in chemical handling, health and safety, and resource management. 


     


     


    Term:  The Initial appointment will be a 2-Year Fixed Term Contract, with possible conversion to ongoing. 


     


    FTE:  3.5 days per week / 7 days per fortnight (0.7 FTE).


     


    Work Schedule: The working days and spread of hours are negotiable.


     


    Salary: HillSide Administration Pay Scale (Non-teaching staff Level 3.1). Available via email request.


     


    Salary is based on the College’s Education Assistants Pay Scale, which is above the Award (MA00076) rate and negotiable on qualifications and experience. Additional paid leave is granted during school vacation periods.


     


     


    KEY EXPECTATIONS


    The successful applicant will be a practising evangelical Christian who is able to demonstrate and work within the College’s Christian framework. They will need to accept the College’s Code of Conduct (including Statement of Faith) and be committed to supporting teaching from a biblical worldview.  Prior to employment the successful candidate must meet all compliance requirements. 


     


    Laboratory and Classroom Support




    • Assist the science team with the preparation and setup of practical lessons and experiments.




    • Observations during student experiments and ensure that all safety protocols are followed.




    • Lead or co-lead demonstrations and experiments where needed.




    • Conduct safety inductions for Year 11 and 12 Chemistry students (SDS handling, labelling, etc.).




    • Provide safety demonstrations for Year 7 and 8 students.




    • Monitor student safety during practical sessions, especially when using hazardous materials or equipment.




    • Support teaching activities in both Secondary and Primary science-related projects.




    • Collaborate with staff to plan engaging activities for events such as Orientation Day.




    • Provide classroom and experimental support to relief and non-Science staff (e.g. Primary, Manual Arts, Art).




    • Provide first aid if required.




     


    Equipment and Resource Management




    • Maintain a comprehensive maintenance schedule for all laboratory equipment.




    • Conduct simple repairs and arrange external servicing as needed.




    • Ensure all equipment is safe, tested, tagged, and includes appropriate “How To” documentation and risk assessments.




    • Maintain orderly and clean labs, classrooms, prep areas, and storage rooms.




    • Assist with equipment acquisition, delivery checks, and stock control.




    • Manage end-of-term tasks, including equipment storage, test and tag prep, furniture moving, fridge cleaning, and textbook return.




    • Liaise with external providers (e.g. Perth Scientific, Rowe Scientific, Westlab) for equipment purchases and scheduled maintenance (e.g. fume cupboard checks).




     


    Chemical and Hazardous Materials Management




    • Maintain and update the Chemical Register and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), both digitally and physically.




    • Ensure proper chemical labelling, handling, and storage in compliance with WHS regulations and GHS7 standards.




    • Manage flammable materials cabinets and chemical cupboards, ensuring regular cleaning and reorganisation.




    • Advise staff on chemical use, disposal, and SDS compliance, including assistance to other departments if needed (e.g. Manual Arts).




    • Prepare and dispose of chemicals according to guidelines.




    • Maintain spill kits, eye wash stations, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).




    • Ensure ongoing compliance of chemical storage practices.




     


    Other Duties




    • Other duties as directed by Deputy Principal 




    • Actively participate in Science Faculty and staff meetings where appropriate.




    • Collaborate with Risk and Compliance Officer to meet WHS requirements.




    • Notify the office when noisy or disruptive experiments are scheduled.




    • Work with Science staff and the Deputy Principal to prepare and monitor the science department budget.




    • Maintain accurate records of purchases, invoices, and inventory.




    • Perform stocktaking and ensure timely ordering of materials and consumables.




     


    Selection Criteria




    1. Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or higher (preferred).




    2. Demonstrated experience in a laboratory or technical environment.




    3. Strong understanding of WHS legislation, regulations, and codes of practice relevant to a school laboratory setting.




    4. Knowledge of chemical and biological safety practices, and ethical handling of animals in Science.




    5. A service-oriented and flexible approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.




    6. Strong organisational and communication skills with attention to detail.




    7. Willingness to assist in other school areas and events outside of core responsibilities.




    8. Ability to conduct Risk Assessments and contribute to safety policy development and review.




    9. Experience in liaising with external suppliers and service providers for laboratory needs.

    An exciting opportunity exists for a Maintenance Officer to join our Facilities team. This is a full‑time, ongoing position.


     


    The Maintenance Officer is responsible for maintaining school buildings, facilities and grounds to a high standard, undertaking general maintenance, minor construction/carpentry, minor plumbing, and handyman duties as directed by the Lead Maintenance Officer.


     


    The role also includes driving the school bus to transport students between campuses in the morning and afternoon, with the remainder of the day allocated to maintenance duties.

    Key Responsibilities



    • Monitor and respond to maintenance requests as prioritised by the Lead Maintenance Officer

    • Carry out general maintenance and repairs across both campuses

    • Perform minor construction and carpentry works (e.g. stud walls, door modifications)

    • Conduct minor plumbing repairs (within scope and qualification requirements)

    • Maintain locks, doors, door furniture and cyber locks

    • Replace faulty lighting and remove debris from external lighting

    • Inspect and clean gutters, downpipes, silt traps and acid traps

    • Repair furniture, desks, chairs and learning equipment

    • Undertake minor wall, ceiling and internal painting works

    • Assist Grounds staff as required

    • Lock and secure school buildings during holiday periods and complete holiday safety checks

    School Bus Responsibilities



    • Drive the school bus on a scheduled morning and afternoon route between Meadow Springs and Halls Head

    • Ensure the safety of students by enforcing seatbelt use and behaviour expectations

    • Conduct pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle safety inspections and complete required checklists

    • Maintain vehicle log books and monitor fuel usage, mileage and passenger numbers

    • Maintain the bus in a clean and roadworthy condition

    • Arrange servicing and attend annual vehicle safety inspections

    • Follow all traffic laws and school transport policies

    • Respond appropriately to delays, accidents or emergency situations

    • Occasionally drive the bus outside scheduled times as required

    About Studio Schools of Australia Ltd


    Studio Schools of Australia (SSA) was established in 2019 to bring about a “system” level change in secondary education for Indigenous students in remote communities across northern Australia. This “system level” reform is based on well-established evidence of what works for Indigenous students, their families and communities, in a scalable, proven work-related model of education introduced at the Yiramalay / Wesley Studio School in the Kimberley, Western Australia, in 2010.

    Overview


    The Community Engagement Officer and Registrar plays a crucial role in fostering strong relationships between the school and its community while managing student enrolment and records. This multi-faceted position involves developing and implementing strategies to enhance community involvement, acting as the primary liaison between the school and local stakeholders, and organising community events and communications. Additionally, the role involves overseeing the enrolment and registration process, maintaining accurate student records, ensuring compliance with regulations, and providing administrative support for admissions. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills, with a passion for education and community engagement. You will help create a supportive and collaborative environment that enhances the educational experience for students and strengthens the school's connection to its community.


    The Four Circles of Learning are embedded within the school, providing a holistic educational framework. This framework integrates Indigenous Language and Culture, Academic Learning, Personal and Social Learning, and Enterprise Learning to provide a holistic education. The mother circle of Indigenous Language and Culture circle grounds students in their cultural identity, boosting their self-efficacy and sense of self. Academic Learning focuses on intellectual development and preparing students for the future by enhancing their capacity for independent learning. Personal and Social Learning helps students envision a confident and successful future as Indigenous Australians. Finally, Enterprise Learning aims to develop dispositions in our students to ensure they become productive members of local community, who are driven to support those around them.


    Operational Responsibilities




    • Develop and implement strategies to enhance community involvement and partnerships 




    • Act as the primary liaison between the school and the local community, including parents, families, businesses, and organisations 




    • Organise and participate in community events, meetings to promote school programs and initiatives developed in partnership with community 




    • Manage communication channels such as newsletters, social media, and school websites to keep the community informed and engaged 




    • Facilitate parental involvement in school activities, ensuring parents are informed and engaged in their children's education 




    • Collaborate with external partners to create opportunities for students, such as internships, workshops, and community service projects 




    • Oversee the enrolment and registration process for new and returning students, ensuring accurate and efficient data entry 




    • Maintain and update student records, including personal information, academic records, and attendance 




    • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and policies regarding student records and confidentiality 




    • Assist families with Abstudy applications 




    • Prepare and manage enrolment reports, statistics, and other data as required by the Principals 




    • Coordinate the transfer of student records to and from other educational institutions. 




    • Assist with the preparation and distribution of academic reports, transcripts, and other official documents 




    • Provide administrative support for school admissions processes, including conducting tours and providing information to prospective families 




    Skills and Capabilities




    • Bachelor’s degree in education, Communications, Administration, or a related field, and/or experience in community engagement, public relations or a similar role 




    • A strong interest in Aboriginal culture, traditions and issues, and a valuing of diversity 




    • A strong interest in working with young Aboriginal people so they can experience success and flourish 




    • Strong administrative and organisational skills, with experience in record-keeping 




    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders 




    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with student information systems or database management 




    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines 




    • Knowledge of educational environments and an understanding of the importance of community involvement in schools 




    • Collaborative and team orientated 




    Desirable 




    • Experience with Aboriginal students and communities or in a culturally diverse setting.
