Description
If you are an Education Assistant located in the Great Southern region, seeking to upskill your knowledge and repertoire of strategies, this PL is for you. This full day PL will cover a range of topics and will be a combination of more formal presentations and hands-on experiences.
Sessions will include presentations on:
- Professional Growth for Education Assistants – Leadership & Teaching Excellence
- ADHD and Autism in the Classroom: The Who, the What and the How – Inclusive Education and School Psychology Service
- Supporting Students with Literacy and Numeracy – Early Childhood

Outcomes
- Develop peer support and networking with colleagues across AISWA schools
- Expand repertoire of strategies to support physical, social and intellectual development of students

- Develop strategies to support differentiation of programs to meet the needs of students across a range of abilities

Dr Julie Harris (AISWA Staff)
Consultant | Leadership & Teaching Excellence
Dr Julie Harris GAICD is a respected educational leader with broad experience in Independent schools across Western Australia, New Zealand and the UK. She has contributed to teaching excellence and whole-school improvement at several Perth schools, including Christ Church Grammar School and St Hilda’s. As Principal of Carmel School since 2022, she has focused on staff development and student engagement. With a PhD in Education and credentials in mediation and coaching, Dr Harris is dedicated to evidence-based practice and collaborative leadership in education.
Ben Smithers (AISWA Staff)
Registered Psychologist
Ben is a registered psychologist who has worked exclusively within independent schools across his career. Starting as a university placement student with AISWA in 2022, Ben supports a caseload of unique schools with a variety of religious affiliations, educational philosophies, and regional statuses. Ben’s passion is in supporting students of diversity and advocating for the needs of neurodiverse students. Ben also has a special interest in the psychology of the internet, including cyber-safety, online communities, and the impact of video game use on mental health, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.

Amanda was appointed as the Inclusive Education Manager at AISWA in 2024. With over two decades working across various educational sectors, including Independent, Catholic, and Government schools, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. She is committed to fostering an environment where all children and young people can thrive, ensuring access to quality, equitable and safe education for every student is paramount.
Melissa Kennedy (AISWA Staff)
Consultant | Early Childhood
Melissa Kennedy’s primary role is supporting Early Childhood programs at Aboriginal Independent Community Schools. Melissa is passionate and dedicated to the education profession with almost 20 years’ experience in both Independent Schools and Indigenous education. She has gained extensive experience filling many diverse roles including Early Childhood Classroom Teacher, Early Childhood Coordinator, Deputy of Teaching and Learning and Principal. Melissa brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in addition to an inherent understanding of community school education and Inquiry pedagogy.
