About Frederick Irwin Anglican School

About the Role
The Chaplain is appointed under AngliSchools’ Chaplaincy Policy and is responsible to the Principal for the performance of duties and works collaboratively with the Executive, Pastoral Care Team, Heads of School, staff, students, families, AngliSchools, and the wider Diocese, while also reporting to the Bishop of Bunbury.

Key aspects of the role include:
·         Ordained Priest (or Deacon) in good standing with the Anglican Church of Australia and able to be licensed by the Bishop of Bunbury
·         Appropriate theological qualifications
·         Current Working with Children Check
·         Current Police Clearance
·         ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence
·         Computer literate with accurate data entry skills
·         Ability to work independently as well as in a cooperative team environment
·         Teaching the Faith in accordance with the Anglican tradition to student through Religious Studies, and to staff and parents associated with the school.
·         Evangelism and Mission
·         Leading chapel services, liturgical events and key Christian celebrations
·         Providing pastoral care, guidance and counselling
·         Promoting service learning and community engagement initiatives
·         Providing leadership and collegiality in the school
·         Confidant to the Principal and staff as appropriate
·         Building strong connections with local parishes and the Diocese 

This is a full-time position, with commencement in Term 1, 2027 or earlier by negotiation.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership of the School’s Anglican Identity
The Chaplain plays a key leadership role in the expression and lived practice of the School’s Anglican identity by:
·         Leading and nurturing the worshipping life of the School through Eucharistic and non‑Eucharistic services, including regular School, Staff and Student Chapel services, staff prayers, and major liturgical celebrations.
·         Preparing, planning and facilitating baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals and other sacramental and pastoral services, providing spiritual direction to the School community.
·         Promoting the Anglican ethos, liturgical calendar, and traditions of Christian worship with dignity and inclusivity.
·         Encouraging and supporting the Christian and spiritual development of staff, students and families within an Anglican context, while respecting and including people of all faiths.
·         Maintaining strong collegial relationships with the Diocese of Bunbury, the Diocese of Perth, AngliSchools, Anglican Schools Australia (ASA) and the Western Australian Anglican Schools Association (WAASA), including active participation in Synod, clergy retreats, conferences, chaplaincy networks and official Diocesan events.
·         Acting as liaison representative between the School, the Diocese of Bunbury, the Bishop and AngliSchools, and keeping the Principal informed of relevant Church and Diocesan matters.

Pastoral Care
The Chaplain actively contributes to the pastoral care and wellbeing of the whole School community by:
·         Supporting and enhancing School pastoral care programmes in collaboration with the Executive and Pastoral Care Team.
·         Providing spiritual, emotional, social and pastoral support and counselling to students, staff and families, including crisis response.
·         Building strong, authentic relationships and offering guidance during times of illness, bereavement and particular pastoral need, including home and hospital visits as appropriate.
·         Facilitating opportunities for student fellowship on and off campus.
·         Maintaining appropriate pastoral records and sharing serious or sensitive issues with the Principal.
·         Supporting and advising the Executive and serving as a trusted confidant to the Principal.

Curriculum and Teaching (where qualified and registered)
The Chaplain contributes to the educational mission of the School by:
·         Teaching Religious Studies to the equivalent of up to 0.2–0.3 FTE, in liaison with Heads of School and Deputy Head of Secondary Teaching and Learning.
·         Assisting teachers to design and deliver engaging Religious Studies programmes that support academic, spiritual, social, emotional and physical development.
·         Participating in classroom activities and supporting staff in integrating the School’s Anglican identity and values into daily teaching practice.
·         Arranging guest speakers and enrichment opportunities to complement Religious Studies programmes.
·         Preparing students for Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion.

Service Learning
The Chaplain actively supports and participates in the School’s Service Learning Programme by:
·         Encouraging service grounded in the School’s Anglican identity, with particular emphasis on Anglicare, Anglican agencies, and AngliSchools service initiatives especially the Samoa Service Learning trip.
·         Supporting the Service Learning Coordinator in the development of whole‑school service strategies and opportunities for meaningful service action and reflection.

Events and Worship Life
The Chaplain takes responsibility for the liturgical content and leadership of significant School events, including:
·         Easter, ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, Founders’ Day, Valedictory Eucharists and other commemorations.
·         Leading prayers and contributing to all major School events as required.
·         Overseeing events that promote the Christian life of the School, including Anglicare Ambassadors, the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast, and WAASA Student Leaders initiatives.

Chapel Oversight
The Chaplain oversees and coordinates all matters relating to the use of the Chapel by:
·         Working closely with the Principal, the Parish of Mandurah, the Rector, Wardens and the Chapel Management Group.
·         Ensuring bookings, shared resources, equipment, furnishings and fittings are coordinated and maintained appropriately.
·         Supporting a positive, collaborative relationship between the School and Parish for the mutual benefit of both communities.

Community Engagement
The Chaplain strengthens School and community relationships by:|
·         Liaising with the Parish of Mandurah and regional parishes to foster positive communication and partnership.
·         Attending WAASA Chaplains’ meetings, AngliSchools events, Deanery meetings, ASA conferences and Chapel Management meetings as required.
·         Assisting the Principal in representing the School at community, Anglican and Diocesan events.
·         Diocese of Bunbury Clergy Retreat, Clergy Conference, Chrism Eucharist and Ordinations.

Administration and Other Responsibilities
The Chaplain:
·         Assists the Principal in achieving objectives outlined in the School Strategic Plan.
·         Reports on Key Performance Indicators as required.
·         Manages the Chaplaincy budget and oversees chaplaincy resources.
·         Presents to parents at Information Evenings and Open Days.
·         Actively engages with School network groups such as ‘Friends of FIAS’.
·         Maintains up‑to‑date Chaplaincy content on the School website and contributes articles to newsletters, social media, Diocesan and AngliSchools publications, including an annual contribution to the School Year Book, The Anchor.
·         Supports all House Groups across the School.
·         Participates in the Staff Appraisal Programme and attends staff meetings as required.
·         Complies with Work Health and Safety requirements and maintains current Working with Children documentation.

As an Anglican School, pastoral care is extremely important at Frederick Irwin Anglican School.

The successful candidate will:
·         Be an ordained Anglican priest or Deacon eligible for licensing within the Diocese of Bunbury
·         Have an accredited theological qualification, preferably at degree level;
·         Have a professional qualification in teaching Religious Studies or Education – this is desirable but not essential;
·         Demonstrate a strong commitment to Christian ministry and education
·         An ability to teach the traditions and sacraments of the Church to the community as all seek to grow together in faith;
·         Have experience in pastoral care and working with young people
·         Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills
·         Be able to contribute positively to a collaborative school environment
·         An ability to work as a member of the leadership team of the school and with local parish clergy where that is appropriate;
·         An open and warm personality which demonstrates a loving concern for others, especially young people;
·         Hold a current Working with Children Check
