Description

This course is for teachers who have embedded Sharp Reading Stage 3 into their guided reading and looking to add even more rigour to the routine. It builds on the basic constructing meaning strategies covered in Guided Reading for Comprehension (Stage 3) which is a course prerequisite. Sharp Reading: Comprehension and Critical Thinking provides students with strategies to deepen their thinking and to analyse and evaluate text as they read

 

This workshop provides participants with:
• a refresher of Stage 3 Comprehension component of the Sharp Reading Progression.
• an understanding of 4 important comprehension strategies that help readers interpret and clarify the deeper meaning of the text.
• tools and strategies that enable students to critically analyse and evaluate narrative and non-fiction text.
• a means for embedding these strategies into their Sharp Guided Reading routine.

The day will begin with refining the Stage 3 Comprehension routine followed by the addition of the Deep Four Strategies from Stage 4 of the Sharp Reading  Progression. The workshop moves on to investigating the critical analysis and evaluation of text beyond sentence level which is Stages 5 and 6 of the Sharp Reading Progression.

TARGET AUDIENCE: 
Participants who have completed Stage 3 PL in Sharp Reading with AISWA or via the Sharp Reading website tutorial.

Christopher Witt joined AISWA in 2009. Prior to that he was a Consultant at STEPS Professional Development as well as a curriculum advisor following 25 years of classroom teaching. After working at AISWA for 15 years as a Literacy Consultant, Chris has moved into the area of animal ethics providing support for teachers and schools, particularly in the use of animals for scientific purposes and related legislative requirements.

Jill Buckrell is a Literacy Consultant with previous experience as a teacher and school leader in both urban and remote schools. She has a strong commitment to improving literacy outcomes for Aboriginal students and has been involved in several major Indigenous Education initiatives in the past as a school principal in remote WA and the Northern Territory. Jill began work at AISWA as a literacy consultant in 2012 and is involved in a number of key professional learning initiatives including: Big Six, Hot Readers and Data Conversations to Target Instruction (literacy). She is also an accredited Sharp Reading presenter and manages the implementation of this program in Western Australia. Jill co-organises the annual Broome Conference for remote Aboriginal schools. Jill’s particular interest lies in the research, development and application of quality literacy strategies and opportunities for students who underachieve in literacy.
