Description

The Philosophy with Young Children through Literature project is designed to improve academic and social outcomes through regular participation by students and teachers with selected storybooks in a philosophical community of inquiry.
The goal of the community of inquiry is to have the children inquire together, listen to each other, to reflect on what is being said and to build on each other’s ideas. The skills of inquiry need to be taught explicitly, scaffolded and modelled.
Expected Outcomes of professional learning:
  • Listen and be listened to while challenging others to think in a critical, creative and caring manner.
  • Elicit philosophical questions from children to encourage thoughtful responses
  • Develop the skills of reasoning and reflection
  • Develop a wide repertoire of meaning making strategies that can be used independently
  • Consider views of others and come to a reasoned judgement, drawing conclusions and seeking alternatives.

We would like to invite you to participate in this exciting opportunity to encourage children to question the given and go beyond easy answers and explore key concepts productively.

Teachers will engage in action learning with their class, join in informal ‘book club style’ conversations with other teachers and share resources as a result of their work. At the end of the project teachers will be asked to share resources and successful practice. Resources could include children’s work samples, child and teacher journal jottings/reflections to activities.
