Expression of interest to participate in Drug Education pilot - Virtual Reality project
A new virtual reality (VR) resource is currently in development to deliver two alcohol and other drugs education lessons for Year 9 students. The resource will include virtual walkthroughs of the adolescent brain to see the impacts of AOD on neurotransmitters and the limbic system. Road Safety and Drug Education (RSDE) are seeking expressions of interest from secondary schools wishing to take part in the project by providing feedback on the VR package and its use by students. The pilot for this project will take place during Term 4, 2022 (October-November) with 20 schools.

Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson (ABCSL) is back in 2022!
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation have been busy developing two brand new lessons for early years children aged 4 to 7 years and upper primary aged children from 8 to 12 years of age, and it’s all about boundaries and body parts. Join in this National event, on Tuesday 6 September, during National Child Protection Week for this important lesson proudly produced by Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Teacher Accreditation Course: Cycling
WESTCYCLE has developed a comprehensive bike education teacher accreditation course with the aim to make teachers competent and compliant to deliver bike riding activities within their school. This course enables teachers to develop a strong knowledge base allowing them to plan for and carry out safe, engaging, and worthwhile bike riding activities with their students. The course has been approved by the WA Department of Education and is listed as an approved compliance course within the Recreation and Outdoor Education Activities for Public School Procedures document. The Sound of Picture Books
The Sound of Picture Books will be returning to The Literature Centre and traveling to Bunbury this September. It was developed in partnership with artist Matt Ottley and is a multi-modal and immersive performance that combines music, visual images, and narration that brings picture books to life. These unique performances are tailored to the age groups attending and reveal the story behind the story. This year two books will be featured, How to Make a Bird by Meg McKinlay and Matt Ottley, and Afloat in Venice by Tina Wilson. Kate Mullin Educator Award Flyer
The Kate Mullin Award has been created in memory of Kate Mullin, a passionate and visionary EALD consultant who made significant improvements in the teaching of Indigenous literacy in Western Australia. This award aims to recognise and celebrate educators who demonstrate excellence in the teaching of English to Aboriginal students, whose first language may be Aboriginal English, an Aboriginal Language or a creole such as the Kimberley Kriol. The educator can self-nominate or be nominated by a line-manager, colleague, student or community member. For more information, please click Here
Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week Opening and Dinner
Friday 19th August, Ambrose Estate at 6:30pm.
Join CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) for an evening of entertainment, conversation, delicious food, amazing raffles, door prizes and costume fun to celebrate the CBCA Book of the Year award winners. Featuring Guest speaker Briony Stewart author and illustrator, who has donated a very special art piece to the CBCA WA Branch which will be offered via Silent Auction with the winning bid announced at the Dinner. This original crayon, ink and watercolour painting of the delightful dog, Magoo from We love you, Magoo and Where are you, Magoo is unique in that the illustrations for the books were coloured digitally, making this a true collector’s item.

Celebrate Reading Conference in Fremantle, 28-29 October
The Literature Centre’s Celebrate Reading Conference will be held in Fremantle on 28-29 October 2022. Presenters include: Morris Gleitzman, Jackie French AM, Marc McBride, Kirli Saunders, Sean E. Avery, Cristy Burne, Gabriel Evans, Deb Fitzpatrick, James Foley, Dr Helen Milroy and Dianne Wolfer.
Delegates attend all panels and solos as there are no concurrent sessions. There will be discussions on key issues in Australian children's literature including: the importance of First Nations voices, writing for diverse learning abilities, history meets imagination, reaching the digital child with story, insights into creating new work, and more!
This conference will provide teachers the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of Australian picture books and junior fiction, particularly their importance in the classroom. There is a single day registration option at $330 per person or the full two day program for $550 per person (Standard).

Premiers Reading Challenge
The challenge will run from May to 9 September 2022. You can take part if you are in Kindergarten up to Year 10, whether you go to your local public school, private school or if you are educated at home. By taking part in the challenge and recording the books you've read, you will be in the running to win some fantastic prizes, including family holidays and experiences across Western Australia.
