Description
This 3-day course delivered over two terms rethinks languages education in light of two major shifts: the ecological view of language learning and the growing impact of generative AI. Traditional approaches that focus on macro skills and the learning of language as code no longer work. They are also inappropriate in our contemporary world.
The sessions will explore how language learning takes place across interconnected ecosystems of pedagogy, curriculum and technology, with a focus on the areas where AI is least effective such as:
• Interaction
• Interculturality
• Multilingualism and multimodal learning
• Working with texts and tasks
• Learner agency and autonomy
The course comprises three face-to-face days together with project-type activities conducted in participants’ schools.
The course is suitable for any teacher who wishes to strengthen their languages curriculum knowledge and for experienced teachers who wish to review and critique their curriculum knowledge and practice within the context of generative AI.
Outcomes
- Design learning tasks that build interaction, intercultural understanding, and learner agency (areas where AI support is limited).
- Incorporate multimodal and multilevel resources into classroom practice.
- Reflect critically on their curriculum knowledge and practice in the current context of languages education.
