Description
This Youth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid course is open to school staff who work directly with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander youth. You must be 18 years or over to attend the course.
Developed by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people this informative and strengths-based course will teach you how to assist Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional support is received or the crisis resolves, using practical, evidence-based action plan.
The course is delivered over two full days.
This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
Health and safety precautions are important considerations for the AISWA MHFA trainers and for those who attend the training. However, these workshops are not designed as a therapy or support group. There is a risk that the information or discussions from these workshops can trigger a strong emotional reaction. Please consider this before choosing to attend the training.
Outcomes
- Recognise the warning signs of mental health problems in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people
- Learn the skills to have an open, supportive conversation about mental health with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young person
- Respond across a range of crisis situations where an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young person may be at risk of harm
- Reduce stigma and increase support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people experiencing and living with mental health problems

Katy Dias (AISWA Staff)
Senior Psychologist
Originally from the UK, Katy trained as a teacher and taught in primary and high schools, mainstream and specialist provisions, in both the UK and in WA. Katy gained her Master's degree in Educational Psychology and worked in London and Bristol before leaving grey skies behind for the sunshine of WA. Katy has been a registered psychologist, working with Non-Government Schools in WA for almost 20 years now. She is a Board Approved Supervisor and enjoys the challenge of supporting the training and development of those joining the profession.
Brian Councillor
Brian is a highly enthusiastic instructor with nearly ten years of experience delivering Mental Health First Aid to frontline workers and the wider community with a background working in Aboriginal Community Control and private mental health and primary health care organisations.
