Description
Join us for an engaging full-day workshop focused on strengthening oral language and early literacy—essential foundations for children’s future reading success. This practical, hands-on session acknowledges the importance of honouring children’s developmental stages and supports educators to create responsive, language-rich environments in the early years. Throughout the day, participants will explore evidence-informed strategies that nurture vocabulary, sentence structure, storytelling, and early comprehension skills through play, conversation, and meaningful interactions. The workshop will also introduce practical tools and routines that can be embedded into everyday practice to support diverse learners and promote confident communication. Educators will leave with fresh ideas, increased confidence, and a deeper understanding of how strong oral language development underpins literacy learning, setting children up for success as they progress through school.
Guest presenter Di McLean from Teach Speak Hear (formerly Telethon Speech and Hearing) will be joining us for the day to ensure all children with language difficulties are included in the early years classroom.
Outcomes
T - Tuning-in: Tuning-in to children's specific language needs in the early childhood classroom. Harnessing children's emerging interests and abilities to curate rich and meaningful experiences for language acquisition. We will also be sharing observational methods to help identify children's language needs in the context of the EC classroom.
A - Advancing: Advancing our application of effective strategies to support children's oral language and pre-literacy development. We will be exploring the power of music and movement in the development of speech sounds, creating highly engaging mat sessions with interactive games and experiences to engage all language learners.
L - Learning Environments: Creating inclusive learning environments that foster rich language and literacy experiences EVERYWHERE. Building on socio-cultural theory, we will be examining how to use our learning centres such as role play to enhance educator and peer interactions and sustained shared conversations.
K - Knowledge and Skills: Building strong partnerships with families in the promotion of early oral language and literacy skills. Experimenting with various Literacy Backpacks to use in our own settings and building resources to share with families.
