Description

Scaffolding Adolescent Literacy is for all adolescents, but particularly those doing Foundation, General and VET courses. This course aims to provide middle/secondary teachers with practical strategies to enable them to improve the reading ability of their students, it takes 3 key elements of the Big 6 in Reading essentials for scaffolding the learning for adolescent students: oral language, vocabulary and comprehension.

Full day of Professional Development - 3 workshops will be presented over 1 day.

Participants will receive:

  • The Scaffolding Adolescent Literacy workbook filled with practical classroom activities.
  • Morning tea and lunch
  • Certification of 6 hours of PL

Session 1: Reading Comprehension

This workshop focusses on enabling students to develop metacognition, that is, a deeper understanding of the reading process. Teachers will acquire practical activities to teach and improve reading comprehension for their students.

Session 2: Building Vocabulary

Continually building an extensive vocabulary is essential to reading comprehension. This workshop will assist teachers to support students in building vocabulary and deepen understanding of new terms and concepts.

Session 3: Speaking & Listening

Workshop 3 equips teachers with great tools and ideas to engage their students in rich classroom dialogue, a key factor for improvement in student learning.

Christopher Witt joined AISWA in 2009. Prior to that he was a Consultant at STEPS Professional Development.  At STEPS, Chris developed a literacy resource for secondary teachers: Tactical Teaching Reading. It included materials and professional learning courses and had great success nationally and internationally, helping many secondary teachers to successfully support literacy across their curriculum area.

After teaching for 25 years, Chris worked in various advisory and consultancy roles in curriculum improvement. He has been at AISWA for 12 years as a Literacy Consultant providing support for teachers and schools in professional learning and literacy improvement initiatives. This includes Sharp Reading, First Steps and Primary Connections. Key PL programs developed by Chris at AISWA include Scaffolding Adolescent Literacy and Programming and Assessment in English (P-10).

Di Edwards <span>(AISWA Staff)</span>

Di Edwards works in the areas of English, Literature and English as a Second Language. She has worked in mainstream schools, both government and private and as a classroom teacher. She has a passion for improving the educational outcomes of students who struggle for a variety of academic, social and emotional reasons.

Di has been employed at The Association of Independent Schools of WA as a literacy consultant since 2008. In this role, she has led and been involved with many exciting and rewarding professional learning opportunities for teachers, in particular, with teachers of adolescents.
