Description

This course provides middle years teachers with practical classroom strategies that focus on all literacy strands including reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, speaking and listening.

Scaffolding Adolescent Literacy is a day of Professional Development  covering all literacy areas. Participants receive the new, updated Scaffolding Adolescent Literacy workbook filled with practical classroom activities covering the following topics:

1. Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Development. This session focuses on enabling participants to develop a deeper understanding of the reading process and how to support their students. It also provides practical advice and ideas on building vocabulary which is essential to comprehension improvement.

2. Writing and Handwriting is a new addition to the course. This session assists teachers to support students in writing improvement through the gradual release of responsibility, including the powerful tool of shared writing. It also delves into the research on the importance of handwriting and how to support students in need.

3. Speaking & Listening. The third aspect of the course equips teachers with effective tools and ideas to strengthen listening skills and engage their students in rich classroom dialogue, a key factor for improvement in student learning.
