Description

You are invited to attend a presentation by three schools about their journeys through a 12-month action research project aimed at improving student, teacher and whole-of-school wellbeing. Primary, middle and secondary schools were involved in the project, which targeted students from Years 5 to 10. The presentations will be followed by a two-hour workshop about social and emotional skills as academic enablers, facilitated by Associate Professor Katherine Main of Griffith University.

Throughout the action research project, each school team built capacity around identifying an issue relevant to their school context and developing a plan, and then implementing that plan through a cycle of continual improvement. The overarching aim of the Raising Trailblazers project was to support school teams to undertake school reform and continue on future cycles of improvement without the need for external assistance.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear about the experiences of the project teams and there will be ample opportunity to question the school teams as well as the project facilitators, Associate Professor Katherine Main of Griffith University and Associate Professor Anne Coffey of the University of Notre Dame.

In the afternoon, Dr Katherine Main will present the workshop, Social and emotional skills: Academic enablers. Recognising that early adolescence is a key developmental period that teachers can capitalise on, this session will examine how to promote the development of social and emotional skills within day-to-day teaching in a classroom.
