Description
Literacy Bites is a series of workshops led by literacy specialists, each exploring a different aspect of K–6 literacy teaching. The sessions are fully stand-alone, allowing educators to attend one, several, or the entire series based on their interests and professional needs.
In the final session, external Languages Consultant Kate Reitzenstein will explore key considerations for supporting EALD learners, including beliefs about language acquisition and the importance of valuing students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds. There will be a specific focus on codeswitching and strategies to support multilingual students access and utilise the different languages they speak. Participants will gain practical, classroom-ready strategies to enhance oral language, build vocabulary, and scaffold literacy learning for EALD students across the primary years.
Outcomes
- Provide content and teaching strategies to support the development and implementation of Literacy programs.
- Provide examples of innovative practice and methodology that can be incorporated into Literacy programs to deliver quality teaching and learning.
- Share expertise of external presenters to expand participants' repertoire of content, knowledge and strategies for teaching Literacy to improve programs and student learning.

Kate Reitzenstein
Kate Reitzenstein is a teacher of Indonesian and EAL/D and has taught across diverse contexts both locally and overseas, from kindergarten to tertiary settings, in government and independent school. She worked as Languages Consultant at the Association of Independent Schools of WA from 2014-2024, providing professional learning, curriculum writing, and advocacy for the profession. In recent years she has been supporting remote Aboriginal schools teach and revitalise traditional languages, and develop literacy through mother tongue programs.
