Description
Literacy Bites is a series of workshops led by literacy specialists, each exploring a different aspect of K–6 literacy teaching. The sessions are completely stand-alone, giving educators the flexibility to attend one, several, or the full series depending on their interests and needs.
This webinar focuses on practical, engaging strategies that support language and literacy development through classroom-based play. Participants will explore simple techniques that can be easily embedded into everyday learning experiences to strengthen children’s communication skills, early literacy understanding, and socioemotional development. The session highlights how playful, intentional interactions can build strong foundations for reading, writing, and oral language. Ideal for teachers seeking fresh, evidence-informed ideas, this workshop offers immediately usable approaches to enhance literacy learning in a meaningful and developmentally rich way.
Outcomes
- Provide content and teaching strategies to support the development and implementation of Literacy programs.
- Provide examples of innovative practice and methodology that can be incorporated into Literacy programs to deliver quality teaching and learning.
- Share expertise of external presenters to expand participants' repertoire of content, knowledge and strategies for teaching Literacy to improve programs and student learning.

Melissa Kennedy (AISWA Staff)
Consultant | Early Childhood
Melissa Kennedy’s primary role is supporting Early Childhood programs at Aboriginal Independent Community Schools. Melissa is passionate and dedicated to the education profession with almost 20 years’ experience in both Independent Schools and Indigenous education. She has gained extensive experience filling many diverse roles including Early Childhood Classroom Teacher, Early Childhood Coordinator, Deputy of Teaching and Learning and Principal. Melissa brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in addition to an inherent understanding of community school education and Inquiry pedagogy.
Nicole Hadlow
Nicole is a certified Speech Pathologist with a special interest in early language and literacy development. Through her role at TSH (formerly Telethon Speech and Hearing), she focuses on practical, evidence-based strategies to support communication and literacy skills in the formative years. Her work in the Talkabout program centres on the power of play as a natural and effective context for building foundational language skills. Drawing on both clinical expertise and collaborative work with educators, Nicole is passionate about bridging the gap between therapy and the classroom.
