Description

This introductory one-day professional learning event will enable schools to enrol and support newly arrived migrant and humanitarian entrant (refugee) students and families from language backgrounds other than English.

The workshop will provide participants with:
• an understanding of the migration experiences of newly-arrived migrant and humanitarian entrants,
• a deeper understanding of the background information to be collected to assist with enrolment, educational placement and supporting social and emotional needs of EAL/D students,
• identification processes to determine language needs vs learning difficulties
• strategies to support parent engagement in the school: and
• information services and resources to support EAL/D students and their families in Western Australia.

Schools are often faced with the dilemma of what questions to ask when enrolling students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, particularly newly arrived migrants and humanitarian entrants. Collecting the correct information is essential to support EAL/D students to learn in and through English, as well as accessing the Western Australian Curriculum. It also enables staff to cater for EAL/D student learning needs, assists them to settle into a new school environment and access relevant services if they have suffered torture/trauma experiences.

This workshop will provide school leaders with effective background information frameworks to use as well as support, services and resources which can be easily accessed.
