Description

Solid and flexible thinking in number and place value are essential for students. This workshop will provide teachers with trialled and tested interactive techniques to allow for whole class engagement as well as some ideas for differentiation and assessment. The practical ideas and activities can be implemented immediately in the classroom getting 2020 off to a cracking start!

Numeracy Consultant

Sheila joined AISWA in 2019. She has a Primary School background working in the state school sector where she had a range of Numeracy roles including the West Australian Project Officer for the teaching of Consumer and Financial Literacy education through the MoneySmart Program. Sheila has also delivered “hands on” Primary Maths workshops at Murdoch University.

She has received several awards with recognition at a national level when she was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Mathematics and Outstanding Primary Maths Teacher of the Year from the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). Additionally, she received a national award for her whole school approach to the teaching of Consumer and Financial Literacy.

Sheila has a passion for improving the teaching of mathematics by supporting schools and teachers through targeted professional learning and practical classroom ideas.

She delivers hands on engaging professional learning to teachers in schools. Her sessions have included practical ideas and activities which can be implemented in the classroom the next day. Within sessions Sheila has provided clear ideas on how to differentiate student learning as well as assessment techniques. These have given teachers the confidence to meet the needs of their students.

Recently, Sheila has been co-author of Teaching Mathematics Through Storybooks 1, 2 and 3 working with Dr Paul Swan.
