Description

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (DSE) are important federal legislation and standards that school must consider and comply with when considering applications for enrolment and throughout the time a student is enrolled in the school including if enrolment status changes and when transitioning out of secondary education.
A sound knowledge of the Standards and obligations is also recommended as part of participating in a school's NCCD decision making processes and reporting obligations.

The 2015 review of the DSE found schools need greater understanding of their legal obligations in catering for students with disability and require further support to better understand what they must do to better cater for students with disability in schools in meeting their legal obligations.
This session will familiarise participants with the legislation as it pertains to education and offer guidelines on appropriate policies and procedures, explore the concept of 'reasonable adjustments' and provide advice on procedural steps and documentation in order to cater for students with disability.
