Description

The Disability Discrimination Act (1992) and the Disability Standards for Education (2005) are important pieces of federal legislation that schools should consider when enrolling and catering for students with disabilities and learning difficulties. The DSE was recently reviewed and a major finding was that schools continue to misunderstand their legal obligations and need further support to meet these obligations into the future. This session will examine the legislation and offer guidelines in the areas that school leaders and teachers may wish to consider when reviewing their policies and procedures.

Tania Wray (AISWA Staff)

Inclusive Education Consultant

Tania Wray is an Inclusive Education Consultant at AISWA and currently supports schools with consultancy and high quality professional learning in the areas of Inclusive Education, Child Protection, diversity/differentiation, disability legislation and special education. Tania has extensive teaching and leadership experience in Early Childhood Intervention and Primary settings across mainstream and special educational schools. This includes past specialist team leadership and consultancy support to WA schools for students with Sensory Impairments (Vision/DeafBlind/Hearing). Tania is a Qualified Specialist Teacher (Vision Impairment), the current South Pacific Educators in Vision Impairment (SPEVI) Councillor in WA and an accomplished national / South Pacific conference speaker. She holds qualifications in Primary Teaching, Early Intervention and Sensory Disabilities and is currently studying Statutory Child Protection.
