Description
This full-day workshop, led by mathematics consultant Sheila Griffin, explores common misconceptions in place value and provides hands-on experience with Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) tasks. With a strong focus on effective place value activities and making the mathematical proficiencies visible in the classroom, participants will engage with practical strategies to deepen student understanding. Educators will examine how to differentiate tasks to meet diverse learning needs and discuss approaches to assessing student thinking at each stage of the CRA sequence. By the end of the session, teachers will gain greater confidence in designing and delivering impactful place value learning experiences.

Sheila Griffin is an award-winning Primary Mathematics Consultant based in Western Australia, renowned for her work in maths education. Founder of Sheila Griffin Maths, she provides tailored, face-to-face professional learning for educators. Sheila has co-authored the “Teaching Mathematics Through Story Books” series with Dr Paul Swan and regularly presents at MAV and MAWA conferences. Her dedication to improving maths teaching has earned national recognition, including the Outstanding Primary Teacher of the Year award from AMSI.
