Description

Leading innovative and exemplary teaching in Mathematics using formative assessment and school-based action research

Brightpath Mathematics Assessment: Years 2 to 6

AISWA and Brightpath are pleased to offer a two-day professional learning session designed to support you with leading innovative and exemplary teaching as well as leading formative assessment and school-based action research. The session will not only help you demonstrate achievement of key exemplary teaching and leadership competencies but will also inspire your teaching and provide collegial support.

Dr Sandy Heldsinger will show you how to use Brightpath mathematics assessments to review school performance, inform teaching and evaluate student growth in learning.

An integral part of this professional learning will be led by Dr Derek Hurrell and Lorraine Day from the University of Notre Dame Australia. It will focus on starting to answer the question of "What next?". No matter how good an assessment tool is, the knowledge and understanding of the teachers about the content, and the appropriate pedagogy to turn that information into top quality teaching and learning, is crucial. We are going to work together to use the data to inform planning at the individual student, small group or class, or whole school level. We are also going to be exploring suitable resources and activities to target developing a conceptual understanding.

What’s involved in the action research

  1. You use at least one Brightpath Number and Algebra tests with your class prior to attending the first workshop.[1]
  2. You attend the first workshop and learn how to:
    1. interpret the Brightpath data to inform planning at the individual student, small group or class, or whole school level.
    2. select and use suitable resources and activities to advance students’ conceptual understandings.
  3. You reassess your students using a Brightpath Number and Algebra test and evaluate the success of your intervention.
  4. At the final workshop, you are invited to share your work and findings.

[1] Many of you will already be aware that Brightpath is free to all WA primary and secondary schools under a licence arrangement with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. Please contact Maureen Lorimer if your school is not already using Brightpath and you would like to get started.

The research completed in the course may also help you in higher studies or if you are applying for promotion.
