Description

Designed for School Executive, Heads of Departments, and interested teachers, this forum will explore the core Principles for Teaching, Learning and Assessment, and highlight the importance of assessment literacy as a critical part of highly effective teaching.

The forum will also address a range of programs and services offered by AISWA to support best practice in teaching, learning and assessment, including the Amplify and graduate teachers program.

Delegates will be able to choose afternoon workshops around three central themes: the Brightpath assessment software; Amplify; and examples of ideas and innovative strategies to support student learning undertaken by schools in the independent school sector.

Throughout the forum, there will be opportunities for delegates to participate in professional discussions with presenters and colleagues and share ideas. Presenters include the Mandy Hudson (School Curriculum and Standards Authority), Dr Sandy Heldsinger (Brightpath) and others.

Valerie Gould (AISWA Staff)

Executive Director

Valerie Gould became the Executive Director of the Association of Independent Schools of WA in July 2008. She has worked for many years in the Western Australian education system with her first four years teaching Economics and Mathematics. The following seven years were spent working in New York with Ernst and Young, and being greatly involved in the introduction of microcomputer applications into business. She returned to WA in 1986 as Director of Computing at St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School for seven years.

During the early 1990s she worked with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (at the time the Secondary Education Authority) for four and a half years before joining AISWA as the Manager of Curriculum and Australian Government Targeted Programs. She has been with AISWA for more than 10 years and has worked closely with schools and other stakeholders in the areas of curriculum change, Curriculum Framework and Senior Secondary Education; and in meeting government regulations from a national and state perspective. Valerie has a Bachelor of Economics and a Diploma of Education, and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators and the Australian Council for Educational Leadership.

Deborah Martin (AISWA Staff)

Early Childhood Consultant

Deb Martin is an Early Childhood Consultant with AISWA who has been working in Early Childhood classrooms since 2006. Her area of expertise and school support is in the area of high quality play based pedagogies, guiding young children's behaviours, Early Childhood literacy and the On-entry assessment. Her work also includes supporting leaders and in particular, their educators, in pedagogical change and embedding evidence based appropriate pedagogies including play-based and inquiry pedagogies and Reggio Emilia inspired practice. Other areas Deb presents in include; helping educators gain a deep understanding about the ever changing neuroscience and recent research related to young children and how this can be translated into high quality classroom practice, looking at the high quality interactions between children and their educators including sustained shared thinking. Due to Deb’s recent experience in the classroom, her practical experiences and rich stories help educators see the possibilities of high quality practice, including a guidance approach to managing behaviour and supporting self-regulation.

Peter Farmer (AISWA Staff)

Numeracy, NAPLAN And Data Consultant

Peter has worked at the Association of Independent Schools WA since 2010 as a full time Numeracy Consultant and, more recently, helping school staff with the analysis of NAPLAN assessment data. He has been involved within the education sector, spanning 35 years, working at a variety of leading Independent Schools as both a teacher and administrator. The majority of his teaching has been at the middle and upper primary level, focussing on Mathematics. A significant portion of his career has also been as an administrator of Curriculum and Day to Day operations. Peter is looking forward to yet another year working for AISWA, and the wider Independent School community, sharing the varied resources available to help teachers plan for effective teaching.

Samantha Wynne (AISWA Staff)

Early Childhood Consultant

Samantha is an Early Years and School Leadership and Teacher Quality Consultant at AISWA.  She is a nationally certified Lead Teacher and brings with her over twenty five years practical experience in early years classrooms.  Sam is a passionate advocate for best practice and pedagogy in the early years and is committed to respecting children, childhood and families. She has held the roles of Lead Teacher and Curriculum Leader K-6 at Lance Holt School in Fremantle before commencing full time at AISWA in 2017. 

Sam attended the first AISWA Scotland Study Tour in 2012 which led to her involvement in the writing and editing of the AISWA Publication Nature Pedagogy (2015). As part of her role at AISWA she has presented on Nature Pedagogy and Principles and Practices of Early Childhood Pedagogy and offers school support to AISWA schools.  

Sam supports AISWA schools in National Quality Standards including the development and implementation of Quality Improvement Plans and Principal Audits. Sam co-ordinates the National Certification of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers (AITSL) and the Graduate Teacher program for AISWA schools

Gary Robinson (AISWA Staff)

Registration And Compliance Consultant

After graduating with a Bachelor in Science (Chemistry) and a Diploma in Education Gary started teaching in 1979 as a science teacher at Norseman District High School. After teaching for 9 years in Department of Education schools in a range of subjects including Chemistry and Physics he moved to Albany, with his family, where for the next 20 years he taught at Bethel Christian School. He was Principal of the school for his last 8 years in Albany. From Albany Gary and his wife moved to Esperance to teach at Wongutha CAPS, a boarding school for Aboriginal students. Gary was offered and accepted a position at AISWA in 2007.

Gary’s first role at AISWA was to support the Aboriginal Independent Community Schools (AICS) as they took on older students as a consequence of the raising of the student leaving age. Gary then worked in the newly created Policy and Registration space for a few years before taking on the management of the AICS support team. Since 2013 Gary has been back as a consultant in the Registration and Compliance area where he works alongside Sarah Kennedy.

 

Kate Reitzenstein (AISWA Staff)

Teaching And Learning Consultant - Languages

Kate Reitzenstein <span>(AISWA Staff)</span>

Kate Reitzenstein has worked as Consultant for Languages of the Association of Independent Schools of WA since 2014. She organises professional development activities and provides advice to schools and teachers on policy, curriculum and resources. Prior to this role, Kate worked as an Indonesian language teacher for fifteen years at three secondary schools, with experience using the Curriculum Framework and the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. She has worked as an EFL/ESL teacher in Australia and abroad, and has had experience as an International Student Coordinator and at establishing overseas school partnerships and in-country study tours. Kate places importance on effective language teaching methodology and the need to link theory to practice in the Languages classroom.

Gail Clark

Gail Clark

Gail is the Western Australian AEDC Coordinator, based in the Office of Early Childhood Development and Learning, Department of Education. In this role, Gail manages the implementation of the AEDC in Western Australia, and works across the State to facilitate the use of the AEDC, supporting schools, communities, service providers, and governments to understand and respond to their results.

Mandy Hudson

Mandy Hudson

Mandy Hudson is the Manager of Curriculum and Assessment at the School Curriculum and Standards Authority, responsible for the implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum for Pre-primary to Year 10 and for Year 11 and 12 Humanities and Social Sciences courses. Mandy’s career commenced as a secondary teacher of Economics (Years 11 and 12) and Social Sciences (Years 8 to 10). After 27 years in the classroom, including Deputy Principal and Head of Department roles, she moved into a curriculum, assessment and moderation role with the Authority. Most recently, Mandy has managed the adoption and adaptation of the Australian Curriculum to develop the Western Australian Curriculum and the Judging Standards Materials.
