Description
Spread over two modules, participants will learn about the ethical and practical considerations involved in using animals in the classroom, with a particular focus on scientific teaching contexts.
In Module 1, participants are introduced to animal ethics, including an overview of the Animal Welfare Act and the animal use Code. This module explores licensing requirements, the need for approval to use live animals in teaching, and the role of the Schools Animal Ethics Committee, helping teachers understand their legal and ethical responsibilities.
In Module 2, the focus shifts to the practical care of animals in the classroom, specifically 0–12 day old chicks. Participants will learn best-practice care requirements to ensure animal welfare and feel confident and competent in managing chicks safely and responsibly in an educational setting.
