Teachers - Students at Risk

SMYL Community College is now looking for highly motivated teachers, commencing in 2020. The positions will be working across our campuses in Fremantle, Cockburn, Rockingham, Kwinana and Mandurah. The College is a referral only ‘Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education' (CARE) School that caters specifically for students who have disengaged from mainstream education.  The College offers a full-time alternative education programme under the School Education Act 1999 (WA) for 12 to 20 year olds. All students referred to the College have significant barriers to education. Teaching and learning is adjusted, and support services provided, to meet students’ needs. As a CARE school the College provides a programme of study meeting the needs of an individual student delivered through an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The successful applicant would be required to work as part of a collaborative and multi-disciplinary team whose objective is to engage all students in learning, no matter how difficult their behaviour. The College utilises a case management model that involves identifying and understanding each student’s issues and developing appropriate solutions. The multi-disciplinary team includes occupational therapist, clinical psychologists, psychologists, case workers, Aboriginal support workers, re-engagement officers, teachers/trainers, literacy and numeracy specialists, education assistants, curriculum officers and careers advisors.The measure of our success is the progress we make to enable students to engage in learning and participate in the workplace and the community.  Teachers support the social and emotional development of our students to support them on this journey.Applicants should address the following selection criteria and show that you have:

  1. Primary, secondary or vocational teaching experience
  2. demonstrated empathy and experience in engaging at-risk young people in education including project based learning;
  3. the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team;
  4. a current TRBWA registration; and,
  5. a current Working with Children Check.

 You will be very highly regarded if you also have:

  • Certificate IV Training and Asessment
  • a current driver’s licence (LR/MR [bus] licence an advantage); or
  • first aid, surf life savers or similar certificates.
