Position vacant: Social Worker – Bunbury campus, full-time Our SchoolBunbury Regional Community College (BRCC) is both a new school and a new kind of school.BRCC opened its doors in Bunbury in 2018 for students in years 10 and 11 and expanded to year 12 in 2019. In 2020 a class of year 10 students was enrolled in Busselton which is now home to year 10 and 11 classes and will expand to year 12 in 2022.The school is deliberately small with classes of 15-18 students with a full-time teacher and education assistant. It is funded as a CARE (Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education) School and enrols students who have experienced barriers to learning in their previous high schools.The school is using the Big Picture Education design. This is based on the belief that the unique interests, needs and abilities of each student must be at the centre of their educational program.Whilst at BRCC students will:
- be encouraged and helped to develop the literacy and numeracy skills that are needed for future success.
- have opportunities to explore and develop their interests both with their teacher in the classroom and with mentors in the community.
- complete interest projects, achieve their OLNA, study a range of certificates and short courses; and
- develop the academic and personal skills that will help them to create positive, productive futures beyond school.
The role of social workers at Bunbury Regional Community CollegeMany students at BRCC have a high level of trauma in their backgrounds and have diagnosed mental health disabilities. As a consequence, students often require support beyond the classroom to help them to successfully re-engage with learning and to move forward positively with their lives.Social workers work closely with the teachers and education assistants to support students in a myriad of ways from advocacy both within the school and with outside agencies, to counselling and personal support, and to the provision of daily needs such as transport, food, conversation and fun.The social work team at BRCC consists of four full time and two part time social workers. We are looking for a full-time Social Worker, to commence immediately. Who do we want?Must hold the qualification of a Degree in Social Work from an accredited course providing eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Overseas qualifications must supply the AASW Overseas Assessment number.At least 2 years of demonstrated experience working in a similar role.A current valid WA C Class Driver’s LicenceA current valid Working with Children Check, or the ability to provide one.The ability to work with young people from diverse backgrounds and needs, and a range of agencies including but not limited to Child Protection and Family Support, Youth Justice Services, health agencies and parents.In general we look for people who are willing to share their interests, passions and story with the students.We require people who help each and every to student matter, who can see and value their culture, talents and interests, who can help them fit by modifying the school and classroom to meet their needs and who can help them work with family and community support.Overall, we need people who never give up on any student.
