Helena College is a non-religious, independent, co-educational school catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 in the Perth Hills, just 25kms from Perth City.

Across two campuses in Darlington and Glen Forrest, we provide a balanced education, developing the whole child through the inquiry-led, International Baccalaureate learning programme, in the primary and middle school years, and prepare students for ATAR and general pathways in Years 10 to 12.

We believe educating students extends beyond the classroom. We provide a holistic learning programme which includes Outdoor Education, camps, sports, arts, clubs and community projects, for students to develop the key cognitive, social and emotional skills they need to flourish and be active members of our broader community.

 Role Description                                                                                                                                        

As part of the Canteen team you will support the development of strong relationships within the school community in particular with the students, parents and volunteers, teachers, and other school personnel. The Helena College canteen aims and objectives are to; provide nutritious, hygienically prepared and healthy food at an affordable and reasonable price.

Status

Part Time during School term only

25 hours over a 2 week cycle during school term time. Working 9am to 2pm three days per week during the first week of the cycle and two days per week during the second week of the cycle.

Additional casual hours will be available as negotiated from time to time

The annualised FTE for this role is 0.278

Helena College - predominantly Glen Forrest Campus but on occasion there may be a requirement to work from the College’s Darlington Campus.

 Duties                                                                                                                                        

The Canteen Assistant will –

  • Provide high quality, healthy food to our students and staff in a professional manner;
  • Ensure health and hygiene practices and procedures are complied with all times;
  • Ensure that all volunteers comply with all relevant policies and procedures as outline by the volunteer management policy;
  • Develop ongoing positive relationships with students, staff and volunteers;
  • Help the younger students to improve their life skills, especially in interacting with adults, by assisting students with orders and canteen purchases, where they can learn to effectively communicate requests, handle money, make good choices and display appropriate manners, in a safe and respectful environment.

General Responsibilities                                                                                                                                        

The Canteen Assistant is required to –

  • Promote the School Vision, Mission and Values;
  • Assist other canteen staff and/or volunteers, ensuring they maintain hygiene, customer service and any other relevant points;
  • Assist other staff or volunteers complete allocated tasks;
  • Comply with the College’s Health & Safety policy and procedures;
  • Be responsible and accountable for continuing compliance to our Child Protection Programme

 Selection Criteria - Essential                                                                                                                                        

  • Formal cooking qualifications (highly desirable) and/or equivalent experience;
  • Current Working With Children Check/Police Clearance;
  • Previous experience in a school setting in canteen or food service related role;
  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Comprehensive understanding of ‘Duty of Care’ and place a high value on Child Protection and well- being;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and organisational ability.
  • Current Driver’s licence

 Selection Criteria – Desirable                                                                                                                                        

  • Completed (or willingness to complete) FoodSafe Food Handler Training or equivalent;
  • Completed (or willingness to complete) Traffic Light training;
  • Experience with the Apple operating platform.
  • Treat students in a respectful, responsible and fair manner with due consideration to the students’ physical, social and psychological development;
  • Ability to manage a small team and create a fun and comfortable work environment for volunteers;
  • Provide a respectful environment.
