Description

In this session we will provide school leaders and teachers with a comprehensive plan for teaching the 400 basic number facts. Teachers are always complaining that, "These kids don't know their tables". Basic facts are more than just the 100 basic multiplications and include addition, subtraction, and division facts. Learning the basic number facts reduces the cognitive load when trying to solve problems. 

Participants will be provided with a plan, a series of assessments and key games and activities that build understanding of the basic number facts.  Links will be made to Problem Solving where the facts are applied in context.

David Dunstan (AISWA Staff)

Numeracy Coordinator

David is the AISWA Numeracy Coordinator and has worked with AISWA for 11 years.  He taught mathematics to rural students in WA for 28 years.  David regularly presents ‘hands-on’ workshops, which includes, “Playing with Place Value”, “Understanding the Connections that make Fractions Fit” and co-presents “A Whole School Approach to Problem Solving and Word Problems”. In collaboration with Dr Paul Swan, David has co-authored 13 books, which includes the “Check the Clues” series,  “My Word Book: Mathematics” and the 2020 “Mathematics Games with School Friendly Cards Book 2: Short & Simple Warm Up Games”.

Dr Paul Swan

Dr Paul Swan has taught mathematics in both primary and secondary schools and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Edith Cowan University in Australia for 18 years.

He has written over 50 books, authored numerous journal articles and created many types of mathematics games – board, card and digital. He currently designs mathematics manipulative materials and supports schools looking to improve the teaching of mathematics in both schools and across whole school systems (State, Catholic and Independent).

He has received numerous awards, including an Honorary Fellowship of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) for his work with School Leaders. For his contribution to Mathematics Education in his home state of Western Australia he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Mathematics Association of Western Australia. He regularly speaks on a variety of topics, particularly in early childhood and primary (elementary education). He received his PhD in 2002 for his study of the computational choices made by 10 - 12 year old students. He currently continues to write and develop materials that may be found on his website www.drpaulswan.com.au as well as acting as a private consultant and professional learning provider to schools.
