This course is aimed at Early Career Teachers (those in years 2 – 5 of their teaching career) who are interested in responding to the diverse needs of students in their classes. The course aims to build the capacity of the teacher in order to better support students who are at educational risk of not achieving their potential. Students in this group may include those who have a disability;  those who are gifted;  and those from significantly different cultural and language backgrounds.
 

This two day course covers 7 units which constitute some of the key understandings and legislative requirements teachers need to know about; and practical strategies for addressing some of the common needs of students in our classrooms.

Unit 1 – Differentiation – Inclusive Classroom  
• What does an Inclusive Classroom look like?
• What do we mean by differentiation?

Unit 2 – Identification of Students
• Observation
• Recording
• Reporting to relevant staff
• Creating an official document

Unit 3 – Working with Parents and Teacher TA Partnerships
• Communicating with parents
• Recording the meeting
• Keeping parents up to date with information
• Consider what effective teacher-TA partnerships look like
• Develop new ways of working collaboratively

Unit 4 – Student Mental Health

Unit 5 – What is Giftedness?
• What is Giftedness?
• How do we identify these students?
• Strategies to support them in the classroom

Unit 6 – Autism Spectrum 
• Understand Autism
• Understand the challenges pupils with Autism face
• Clarify how you can support the needs of these pupils in the classroom
     
Unit 7 – Understanding Learning Difficulties
• Understanding Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia
• Support pupils to access the curriculum

Rebecca Delaney is an Inclusive Consultant for AISWA. Her expertise in Special and Inclusive Education has spanned over twenty five years both in the United Kingdom and Australia. Working in a variety of roles such as a specialist support assistant, teacher, tutor and Head of Department she has gained valuable training and knowledge, working alongside other professionals in Special Education. She has also experience in the field of Gifted Education and Early Childhood and has utilised this in a variety of different contexts in her career.

Kate Stannard (AISWA Staff)

Kate Stannard joined the Inclusive Education team at AISWA in February 2017. She studied to be a Primary teacher in London, teaching there for a number of years before moving to Perth in 2005. Through her time in the classroom, Kate has developed a passion to see all students actively engaged with their own learning. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Education and English Literature, a Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and a Masters of Education (Special Learning Needs).

Lynne Nixon (AISWA Staff)

Over the past 40 years, Lynne has gained extensive experience in both education and small business ownership. Her teaching career in NSW and WA spans early childhood, primary, and lower secondary classrooms, as well as special needs education and music. She has also held school leadership roles, including Principal of an independent school in WA. In addition, Lynne has supported and mentored school leaders and assisted schools through the school registration process.

Since joining AISWA in 2017, Lynne has demonstrated her passion for supporting schools in the areas of special needs education and child protection. Her roles have included Inclusive Education Consultant and Coordinator, and she currently serves as a Child Protection Consultant.

In her current role, Lynne provides guidance and support to all AISWA schools in the areas of child safety and protection. She is the key contact for inquiries related to child abuse, including mandatory reporting, and delivers a variety of training programs focused on preventing and responding to child abuse, ensuring schools meet registration requirements.

Maggie Balfe (AISWA Staff)

Inclusive Education Consultant

Maggie Balfe joined the Inclusive Education team at AISWA in January 2015. She has worked in the field of education for many years; starting her career in special education teaching in the 1980s with the Department of Education in Western Australia as a teacher in special schools. During the early 1990’s she worked in the United Kingdom as part of an early intervention team supporting families of children with disabilities. On her return to Western Australia she worked for Catholic Education WA taking on a variety of roles (Consultant for Students with Disabilities, followed by Coordinator of a High Support Needs Centre and finally teaching students with disabilities at secondary level) before joining AISWA. As an Inclusive Education Consultant Maggie supports schools promoting positive inclusive practices for students with disabilities in schools. Maggie has a Bachelor of Education and a Graduate Diploma in Special Education.

Julie Townsend (AISWA Staff)

Lead Psychologist

Julie Townsend <span>(AISWA Staff)</span>

Julie is an Educational and Developmental Psychologist who has worked with Non-Government schools in Western Australia for over thirty years. Julie is currently the lead of the AISWA School Psychology Service. She has a passion for sharing psychological knowledge to support schools in optimising the learning, development and wellbeing of students.  As part of the school psychology service, she works with children, parents, carers and teachers to help them understand issues students may experience. Julie is a current psychology board approved supervisor who has a passion for supporting the professional growth and development of psychologists.
