Description

Currently 20% of students in Australian schools experience learning difficulties.  Some students have missed school, others may have not received adequate instruction and yet others (3-5%) may struggle with a learning disability.  Difficulties, disabilities, disorders …. What do these terms mean? How do we tell the difference?

You will gain:

An understanding of the indicators of a Specific Learning Disability/Disorder (SLD)

An understanding of the process for identification of SLD and the role schools play

A deeper knowledge of effective teaching strategies that can be implemented to meet the needs of these students

Kate Stannard joined the Inclusive Education team at AISWA in February 2017. She studied to be a Primary teacher in London, teaching there for a number of years before moving to Perth in 2005. Through her time in the classroom, Kate has developed a passion to see all students actively engaged with their own learning. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Education and English Literature, a Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and a Masters of Education (Special Learning Needs).

Toni Tomlin (AISWA Staff)

Lead Psychologist

Toni Tomlin is a Lead Psychologist with the AISWA School Psychology Service who has been working in Independent schools for almost 25 years. Toni has a special interest in autism, speech and language disorders, and trauma-informed practice.
