Description

This short workshop, Steven and Jan will introduce participants to the Scratch and Scratch Jr coding apps. Both are free of charge. Scratch is designed for 8-16 yrs, is web-based and works readily on all platforms except iPad. Scratch Jr has been especially designed for Early Years students working on iPads and uses icons so no word reading is required.

With Scratch and Scratch Jr, students can learn the basics of algorithms, loops/iterations and branching and design and produce their own interactive stories, games, and animations (all aspects of the curriculum content in Digital Technologies in Primary years). Projects can easily be integrated with topics across the curriculum, providing a useful tool for STEaM integration.

Scratch and Scratch Jr help students learn to think creatively, reason logically and sequentially, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century.

Scratch is available in more than 40 languages. To change languages, click the menu at the bottom of the page. Or, in the Project Editor, click the globe at the top of the page. This may make it useful for languages teachers too!

NB: While introducing both, flexibility in the workshop will allow participants to focus on the version of Scratch most suitable for their own classroom needs. The principles of using Scratch blocks can be applied to other apps that can be used on iPad, such as Hopscotch.
