Description

This course aims to provide middle/secondary teachers with practical strategies to enable them to improve student writing through a gradual release of responsibility approach.

Full day of Professional Development - 3 workshops presented over 1 day.

Participants will receive:

  • The Scaffolding Adolescent Writing workbook filled with practical classroom activities. 
  • Morning tea and lunch
  • Certification of 6 hours of PL

Session 1: A Scaffolded Teaching and Learning approach

This workshop focusses on taking curriculum goals to build a teaching cycle that begins with literacy activities that enable students to internalise the language of the selected text genre.

Session 2: Text Deconstruction and a Gradual Release of Responsibility

Workshop 2 examines how teachers can deepen student knowledge of text structure and language through text analysis, modelling, sharing and joint construction as well as guided practice through the writing process of planning, drafting, editing and publishing.

Session 3: Writing Issues in the Secondary School

This workshop explores three secondary school issues with regards to literacy and writing. The first is spelling and how to teach it, the second is understanding and teaching genres across learning areas, whilst the third is authentic assessment and how to integrate it into the teaching and learning cycle.
