Description

This course focuses on comprehension teaching through the GUIDED READING component of your reading program. It provides an efficient routine that gets results.

This course provides participants with:

• a knowledge of the skills employed by successful readers,
• an explicit, transferable routine for comprehension instruction, that empowers students and simplifies the work of teachers
• a routine that acknowledges current brain research that reduces anxiety and frees up working memory to enable readers to improve their ability to construct meaning
• skills for recognising comprehension quality and addressing student needs through explicit teaching
• a clear learning pathway for the teaching of reading

Whether working one-to-one, in small groups, or with the whole class, this approach to reading comprehension instruction is simple and effective. Comprehending at a sentence level engages students in active reading and deepens their understanding of the text, motivating them to practice the reading strategies they need to succeed. Extensive research and classroom trials support its effectiveness as a guided reading approach that improves reading achievement.

The course will begin with getting the Comprehension Strategy Instruction routine right, Following that participants will explore strategies and resources for ongoing formative data collection that informs explicit teaching for students at the point of need.
