Description
Instructional coaching focuses on supporting and enhancing teachers’ instructional practices to improve student learning. It involves a collaborative partnership between a coach and teacher, with the coach providing individualised support, feedback and guidance, and facilitating reflective conversations and goal setting. It aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice by connecting teachers with the latest evidence and most effective teaching strategies which improve the quality of classroom instruction. Done well, instructional coaching helps teachers grow and develop their expertise, and improved learning experience and outcomes for students.
For teaching and learning leaders and teaching staff, this event is designed to show the systems and structures that support a coaching program in a school and will provide attendees the knowledge and skills to begin or enhance an instructional coaching program in their school. It will share clear, effective steps to move towards creating a coaching culture. Facilitated by Dr Mark Dowley from Brighton Grammar School (BGS) in Melbourne, Mark will share the journey of how BGS created a positive coaching culture, improved student outcomes and staff relationships, and become an employer of choice. Similar Coaching in Action Days at BGS have become a well-subscribed PL activity for schools and educators around Australia. This is a unique opportunity to attend a CIA Day in Perth.
By the end of the day, participants will:
• Gain the knowledge and skills to begin or enhance an instructional coaching program in your school
• Understand the systems and structures that support a coaching program
• Learn how to create the conditions for psychologically safe and productive coaching relationships
• Learn practical steps to move your school towards a coaching culture
• Learn how to develop a sense of belonging and connectedness in your teams
• Gain clarity on mastery in teaching
• Learn how to design a system of professional learning that supports teachers’ desire to improve
