Description

Using the WA curriculum general capabilities to prepare learners for 21st-century challenges

UNAAWA offers schools six programs and resources aligned to Western Australian curriculum focusing on content standards, general capabilities and the UNESCO framework for Global Citizenship Education. The programs build students' Global Competence – to be included for the first time in PISA 2018 (Program of International Student Assessment).

Programs include:

Global Skills Passport (in development): this student centered resource provides an opportunity for students to map their progress against 

  • Creative and Critical Thinking
  • Ethical Understanding
  • Intercultural Understanding
     

Students move through 4 levels from bronze to platinum recording their progress from year to year, providing evidence of competency.  

2017 Sustainability Challenge: focusing on the 17 UN global goals, teachers and students work together through project based learning.

Claire Sly <span>(AISWA Staff)</span>

Claire joined AISWA in April 2015. She has worked in education over the past 18 years in both primary and secondary schools, predominantly as a science and maths teacher. Since moving to Western Australian in 2010, she has worked in both the Catholic and Independent sector, most recently at a large Independent school as Head of Learning Enrichment. Claire has a First-class honours degree in Chemistry, a Master of Education, specialising in special educational needs and she is currently undertaking a Doctor of Education at UWA, focusing on pedagogy and curriculum. 

Rees Barrett

Rees Barrett

Currently the School Programs Coordinator for UNAAWA, Rees has 45 years' experience in school education including secondary teaching in the Humanities and Social Sciences area (geography, history and citizenship), educational administration, curriculum, school assessment and review.  His curriculum experience includes the Kindergarten to Year 10 Social Studies syllabus (1980s), National curriculum for Australia (1990s), Curriculum Framework and VET in Schools (2000s). Rees has published textbooks in Australian geography and a primary library series Significant People in Australia's History (2009).

Since retiring from full-time work in education, Rees had led the development of the UNAA Global Citizenship Schools and related programs. The 2016 UNAAWA Student Leaders' Parliamentary Conference was the most rewarding moment of 'volunteer career' so far. He believes in the 'butterfly effect'.
