Description

Dialogic Drawing has been used in the AISWA Transforming Transitions projects in early childhood to find out more about children’s expectations and experiences of the transition to school, and was used to gather children’s perspectives that informed the updated EYLF2.0. Now, it is set to become a practical pedagogical tool for teachers who want to boost engagement. Like a pedagogical litmus test, Dialogic Drawing gives direct feedback to teachers about their practice from the perspective of the early learner.

By finding out why, how and what engages children in school and learning, Dialogic Drawing gives teachers tangible evidence to inform planning for continuous improvement in the early years.

Outcomes

  • Use key drawing prompts and methods of documentation during the drawing process to learn about children’s perspectives.
  • Gain insights into children’s executive function using Dialogic Drawing.
  • Use of Dialogic Drawing to listen, assess and evaluate children’s engagement in school and learning and inform future planning.
  • Reflect on and articulate their perceptions and experiences of using Dialogic Drawing in the classroom.

Amelia Ruscoe

Amelia Ruscoe

Dr Amelia Ruscoe is an experienced educator and leader in early childhood education in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University with more than 25 years in school and university settings across QLD, NSW and WA. Her research and practice centres on the development of innovative ideas to support, extend and enhance the learning experience of young children, and emerging educators, in the ‘impact zone’ of transition to school. She is a published author and presents to local, national and international audiences of educators and academics. Her doctoral research explored education discourse, multiplicity of perspectives and affordances in early childhood education and was awarded the Western Australian Institute for Educational Research Award for best higher degree thesis 2021. Her dedication to making a substantial contribution to education has been fortified through involvement in a number of education research projects across the past 10 years including industry and university funded literacy and school transition projects.
