Description

Fluency is one of the Four Proficiency Strands of the Australian Mathematics Curriculum. In this session, a comprehensive set of Milestones for developing Fluency in the Basic Number Facts will be provided. Participants will be exposed to the TPA (Teach Practice Apply) sequence for developing basic number fact knowledge. The role of Understanding (another of the Proficiency Strands) will be explored as part of the ‘Teaching’ phase. Games and simple short activities will be highlighted in the ‘Practise’ phase and the Problem Solving and Reasoning proficiencies will be explored in the ‘Apply’ part of the sequence. Participants will be provided with assessment options for determining whether students reach specific Milestones. Ideal for school leaders, numeracy leaders, and teachers in Years 1 – 4, where the basic facts are learned, or for teachers of older students struggling to learn the basic number facts.

David is the AISWA Numeracy Coordinator and has worked with AISWA for over 13 years.  He taught mathematics to rural students in WA for 28 years.  David regularly presents at state and national conferences, and delivers ‘hands-on’ workshops, which includes, “A Whole School Approach to Teaching Place Value” and “Using Cards and Counters to Link the Proficiencies”. In collaboration with Dr Paul Swan, David has co-authored 27 books, which includes the “Check the Clues” series, “My Word Book: Mathematics” and the 2023 published, “Teaching Place Value” series.

Sheila has a passion for improving the teaching of mathematics by supporting schools and teachers through targeted professional learning and practical differentiated classroom ideas. Sheila is co-author of Teaching Mathematics Through Story Books 1,2 and 3 with Dr Paul Swan which was shortlisted at the national publication awards in 2022.

Sheila has a primary school background working in the state school sector where she had a range of Numeracy and leadership roles including the West Australian Project Officer for the teaching of Consumer and Financial Literacy education through the MoneySmart Program. Sheila has also delivered “hands on” Primary Maths workshops at Murdoch University.

She has received several awards with recognition at a national level when she was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Mathematics and Outstanding Primary Maths Teacher of the Year from the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). Additionally, she received an award for her whole school approach to the teaching of Consumer and Financial Literacy.

Dr Paul Swan

Dr Paul Swan

Dr Paul Swan has many years of experience having taught at the primary secondary and tertiary level. He has written many books and games and created resources to help support teachers and the teaching of mathematics. His website www.drpaulswan.com.au contains many further support materials, many which are free.

He is the recipient of many awards, the most recent being for the development and publishing of Bond Blocks. Recently he has developed video PL courses and offers live and pre-recorded video PL as well as face to face PL.

In Person event conditions

  • Attendance records: Participants must sign-in on the day to confirm attendance. A member school can also view this data for their staff.
  • Privacy disclaimer: PL Events may be live-streamed, recorded or photographed by AISWA for sharing. Attendees have the right to be excluded from such records but must notify AISWA of their wishes before the start of the event. NB: This condition was acknowledged during registration. See full T&Cs here.
  • Attendee swaps: Acceptable. The organiser must be notified. There are conditions.
  • Walk Ins: Any non-registered attendee MUST disclose this to AISWA on arrival. A correct registration process can then be followed. 
  • IT Acceptable Use Policy: Compliance with this policy for the use of AISWA’s on-site equipment, internet and website is required.
  • Payment Conditions: Price includes GST. Credit card payment only for Guests. Member schools will be invoiced post-event.
  • Cancellation: Cancellation is without charge if prior to Cancellation Permitted date. Cancellations via this website. Late cancellations or failure to attend will incur full cost. Refer any issues to the Event Organiser. If AISWA cancels a PL Event, attendees will be notified by email and any payment will be refunded.
