Description
Unit fractions are an integral understanding that will help students when comparing, ordering and operating with fractions. There will be a "Teach, Practice and Apply" approach shown, and this will be modeled mainly on the Year 6 curriculum. Participants will receive a booklet and some resources that accompany this approach.

Numeracy Coordinator

David is the AISWA Numeracy Coordinator and has worked with AISWA for nine years. He taught mathematics to rural students in WA for 28 years. David delivers ‘hands-on’ workshops, which include' "Engaging in Problem Solving and Reasoning Tasks", "A Whole School Approach to Problem Solving and Word Problems" and "Check the Clues Cooperative Problem Solving". He is a regular presenter at national mathematics conferences. David is a co-author of the “Check the Clues” series and "Playing with Place Value". In his most recent collaboration with Dr Paul Swan, the “My Word Book: Mathematics” was published in 2018.
Dr Paul Swan

Dr Paul Swan has taught mathematics in both primary and secondary schools and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Edith Cowan University in Australia for 18 years.
He has written over 50 books, authored numerous journal articles and created many types of mathematics games – board, card and digital. He currently designs mathematics manipulative materials and supports schools looking to improve the teaching of mathematics in both schools and across whole school systems (State, Catholic and Independent).
He has received numerous awards, including an Honorary Fellowship of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) for his work with School Leaders. For his contribution to Mathematics Education in his home state of Western Australia he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Mathematics Association of Western Australia. He regularly speaks on a variety of topics, particularly in early childhood and primary (elementary education). He received his PhD in 2002 for his study of the computational choices made by 10 - 12 year old students. He currently continues to write and develop materials that may be found on his website www.drpaulswan.com.au as well as acting as a private consultant and professional learning provider to schools.
