Description
Appreciating and Composing Poetry with Dr Beverly Derewianka
In May-June 2023, AISWA is planning a mini-project to enhance the teaching of poetry in AISWA schools, with a particular focus on how poets use language to bring their poems to life.
Dr Beverly Derewianka (A new grammar companion for teachers; Exploring how texts work; Teaching language in context) will guide this exciting project, which will result in shared resources for Years 3-10, developed by participants and their students.
The project will involve:
- A full-day workshop led by Beverly where teachers will explore a number of poems and strategies for teaching poetry.
- Several weeks where participants will experiment with at least one workshop strategy to produce samples of student poems and to document the process. During this time, they will collaborate with colleagues and with Beverly.
- A second full-day workshop with Beverly, where participants share their experiences and their students’ poems and shape them into resources to be shared with the AISWA community.
This event is for secondary teachers in Perth
