Description
This network session is for teachers, admin and any staff member involved in the use and care of animals at school, in particular, the use of animals for scientific purposes.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommend that investigators in schools access appropriate training on animal welfare. This session provides this training through an interactive course delivered during the afternoon and will be followed by networking activities.
The training will cover 3 topics:
• An introduction to animal ethics
• Responsibilities under the Code
• Caring for chicks hatched in the classroom
Outcomes
At the end of the session, participants will:
• become aware of the Animal Welfare Act and the animal use Code
• understand licensing requirements as described under the Act
• understand why you need approval to use live animals for teaching
science
• learn how to obtain approval from the Schools Animal Ethics Committee
• understand your responsibilities under the Code
• feel competent to take care of 0 – 12 day old chicks.

Christopher Witt joined AISWA in 2009. Prior to that he was a Consultant at STEPS Professional Development as well as a curriculum advisor following 25 years of classroom teaching. After working at AISWA for 15 years as a Literacy Consultant, Chris has moved into the area of animal ethics providing support for teachers and schools, particularly in the use of animals for scientific purposes and related legislative requirements.
