Description

This session, supported by the federally funded CSER project via AISWA, introduces algorithms and visual programming for the middle/upper primary year levels. We will consider examples of visual programming systems, and explore example activities that show how visual programming can be incorporated in years 3-6 and integrated with other learning areas. We will look at how these topics fit within the WA Curriculum and consider ways of designing lesson activities and assessing student achievement. We will also show you how to access the CSER online courses and resources to support professional learning for teachers – highlighting those that support algorithms and programming.

Example programs that Steven Payne, the CSER project officer for WA, will use include:
Scratch - a free programming language where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations, music and art. It is easy to get started but the possibilities for extension and integration are endless. We will also look at using Scratch with Makey Makey to see how we can combine our games and activities and control them with everyday objects.
Kodu - lets students create fun games on the PC via a simple visual programming language. Kodu can be used to teach creativity, problem solving, storytelling, as well as programming. Anyone can use Kodu to make a game or interactive story.
