Description
2022 is a significant year for secondary schools because in addition to meeting mandated language learning, teachers must also plan, deliver, assess and report using the Western Australian Curriculum: Languages, thus phasing out the Curriculum Framework. The 2022 Ready two-day workshops provide an opportunity for secondary Languages teachers to familiarise themselves with the WA Curriculum of both the P-10 and 7-10 sequences for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the Strands and Sub-strands, and Content Descriptors in detail.Features that will be explored include how the Languages learning area can support students’ development of the General Capabilities and Cross Curricular Priorities. The aims of this professional learning event include:
- Explore the design of the WA Curriculum, and discuss key concepts and implications for teaching
- Evaluate and revise secondary language programs
- Develop leadership skills and plan for change
- Examine the interests and needs of secondary language learners
- Explore strategies for differentiation
- Explore effective task design and rate task exemplars
- Share ideas and network with colleagues

Kate Reitzenstein (AISWA Staff)
Consultant | Teaching And Learning - Languages

Kate Reitzenstein has worked as Consultant for Languages of the Association of Independent Schools of WA since 2014. She organises professional development activities and provides advice to schools and teachers on policy, curriculum and resources. Prior to this role, Kate worked as an Indonesian language teacher for fifteen years at three secondary schools, with experience using the Curriculum Framework and the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. She has worked as an EFL/ESL teacher in Australia and abroad, and has had experience as an International Student Coordinator and at establishing overseas school partnerships and in-country study tours. Kate places importance on effective language teaching methodology and the need to link theory to practice in the Languages classroom.
Marisa Schiavi

Marisa Schiavi currently holds the role of EAL/D & Languages Team Coordinator at CEWA and has significant experience working in the field of Multicultural and Multilingual Education. This includes various teaching and leadership roles in Primary and Secondary Schools and Tertiary Institutions, Intensive English Units and bilingual schools teaching migrant and refugee students, as well as domestic and international students in Australia and abroad. In addition, Marisa has worked in the corporate sector as Director of Multicultural and Multilingual Services. In her current role, Marisa provides support and guidance on multicultural and multilingual education matters across all CEWA schools.
