Description
2022 is a significant year for secondary schools because in addition to meeting mandated language learning, teachers must also plan, deliver, assess and report using the Western Australian Curriculum: Languages, thus phasing out the Curriculum Framework. The 2022 Ready two-day workshops provide an opportunity for secondary Languages teachers to familiarise themselves with the WA Curriculum of both the P-10 and 7-10 sequences for Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, and Japanese. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the Strands and Sub-strands, and Content Descriptors in detail.Features that will be explored include how the Languages learning area can support students’ development of the General Capabilities and Cross Curricular Priorities. The aims of this professional learning event include:
- Explore the design of the WA Curriculum, and discuss key concepts and implications for teaching
- Evaluate and revise secondary language programs
- Develop leadership skills and plan for change
- Examine the interests and needs of secondary language learners
- Explore strategies for differentiation
- Explore effective task design and rate task exemplars
- Share ideas and network with colleagues

Kate Reitzenstein (AISWA Staff)
Teaching And Learning Consultant - Languages
Kate Reitzenstein has worked as Consultant for Languages of the Association of Independent Schools of WA since 2014. She organises professional development activities and provides advice to schools and teachers on policy, curriculum and resources. Prior to this role, Kate worked as an Indonesian language teacher for fifteen years at three secondary schools, with experience using the Curriculum Framework and the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. She has worked as an EFL/ESL teacher in Australia and abroad, and has had experience as an International Student Coordinator and at establishing overseas school partnerships and in-country study tours. Kate places importance on effective language teaching methodology and the need to link theory to practice in the Languages classroom.

Marisa Schiavi
Marisa Schiavi is currently the Languages and EAL/D Consultant K-12 at CEWA, a position she has held for the past two years. Marisa has a strong interest in the fields of second language acquisition, multiculturalism and intercultural communication and is a strong advocate for equal opportunities for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students. Marisa grew up in Argentina, she speaks Spanish, English and French fluently and has passive knowledge of Italian and Portuguese. During her career in education and translation, she has led, managed and coordinated various Language and EAL/D Departments and Programs and has taught Modern Languages (French and Spanish) and EAL/D in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in Argentina, England and Australia.
Marisa holds four undergraduate and postgraduate University degrees majoring in Applied Linguistics (TESOL and Languages), Translation and Bilingualism, General Education and French and is currently working towards her Master’s degree in Leading Education. Marisa regularly presents workshops and professional development sessions for teachers and school leaders and provides support and advice to schools and various panels and committees.
