Description

The G2P course is designed to meet the needs of Early Career teachers (ECT's) as they work towards the Proficient career level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, and full registration - from Graduate to Proficient.  We assist them to develop a sense of agency, identity and purpose as their capacity grows through an in-depth exploration of the common issues and problems of practice for the beginning teacher.

Early career teacher resilience is promoted when the focus is on understanding the complex, intense and unpredictable nature of teachers' work rather than on individual deficits and victim blaming.  Early Career Teachers: Stories of Resilience 2012

The Early Career Teachers are supported throughout the course by Nicola Davidson and have opportunities to work with a wide range of AISWA consultants from the Leadership, Psychology, Curriculum areas, in addition to invited school Leaders, accomplished classroom teachers and prior attendees of the program.  This support alongside the school based mentor provides the beginning teacher with a strong and knowledgeable network to guide them during the first year/s of their graduate journey.
This is a five day course and attendance is expected. Three of these days occur during term time and the other two are held during the school holidays. Over the 5 days we cover:

  • Personal resilience and wellbeing
  • Working with your mentor
  • Developing a growth mindset
  • The First 6 weeks of school  - establishing a positive classroom culture
  • How to talk to parents
  • Writing reports and conducting 3 way interviews
  • Building your professional identity and mindset
  • Behaviour management and classroom strategies
  • What Principals, parents and students wish you knew
  • The power of words - language in the classroom
  • Portfolio development Graduate to Proficient
  • Small group and individual coaching sessions
Each graduate will need a school based mentor. Mentor training is available and teachers who are new to the mentoring role will learn how to best support their graduate.  Mentors can register for Mentor training via the AISWA website click here.

Heads of School are asked to assist their graduate teachers to enrol in this course as soon as possible.
