Dialogic Teaching: More than talk!

Learning Area

Dr Julie Hamston, University of Melbourne, is presenting this workshop which will focus on dialogic conversations in the classrooms. Dialogic talk is fundamental to learning and thinking and this workshop will feature analysis of classroom practice – via film and transcripts – to review how teachers become conscious of their own language use. Exploratory talk and collaborative reasoning skills will be explored and strategies shared to support students’ capacity to articulate their thinking.

This workshop aims:

  • To explore and extend teachers’ understandings and implementation of classroom dialogic talk.
  • To provide opportunities for teachers to investigate their own classroom discourse practice through data collection and analysis of classroom talk within local classroom contexts.
  • To develop a community of on-going professional learners across AISWA schools to support dialogic talk.
