Commissioner for Children and Young People WA: Engagement in Education

The Commissioner for Children and Young People WA has undertaken a major education consultation to explore the factors that influence a student’s level of engagement in school and the complex interplay these factors have on each other and their overall engagement.

Collaborating with the Department of Education, Catholic Education Western Australia and the Independent Schools Association of WA, the Commissioner’s office consulted more than 1,800 students from 98 primary and secondary schools around the state in a range of surveys and workshops.

The participating schools were randomly selected from metropolitan and non-metropolitan schools across the government, Catholic and Independent education sectors.

Much effort has been put into developing resources, frameworks, policies and programs to support and engage students. This work is important and has helped many students, but by listening to the voices of children and young people, it is clear there is more to be done to create a truly responsive and equitable education system.
