Description

Using literature as the springboard for students’ writing really does work. Combine this with well-supported classroom assessment and you get greater than expected growth in students’ writing.
In 2019, AISWA established action research to investigate ways of assisting teachers with nurturing and developing students’ writing skills through literature and a focus on language, storytelling, character and the creative process. The results were very promising. many students achieved about a year’s growth in a six-month period and some achieved even greater growth in this short time. One year 4 student started his base-line narrative with: Once in a dark night someone was walking down the street heading to KFC. Not a bad start, but look what he could write a few months later. In a city of wonders and creativity a unique boy had a singular wish to find a dinosaur.

The course arises from the action research.  Teachers will learn how to use the Brightpath teaching points and quality literature to invigorate, stimulate and explicitly teach their students how to write engaging stories. We are confident that the course will complement and enhance your existing writing programs.

REQUIREMENTS

The course is designed for schools or teachers who are already actively using Brightpath.

Prior to attending the first workshop participants will be required to:

  1. Administer and assess their students’ narrative writing.
  2. Read one of the children’s books used in the course.

After the first workshop participants will be required to:

  1. Analyse their students’ writing and plan a series of lessons that use literature as the springboard for students’ writing.
  2. Briefly document their analysis of their students’ writing and briefly document how they used literature to teach writing.
  3. Reassess their students’ narrative writing.

In the second workshop participants will be invited to share what worked and what didn’t.  They will also be given time to consider ways of sharing their findings with colleagues in their school.
