Description

Please note this workshop is being held at Goldfields Baptist College.

At least one term of classroom practice using Comprehension Strategy Instruction (Stage 3) is a prerequisite for this workshop.

WORKSHOP PART 1: Getting the routine right (STAGE 3 Refresher plus STAGE 4 – THE DEEP FIVE: Getting started)

SHARP READING focuses on the GUIDED READING component of your reading program. Participants explore a simple routine for teaching the advanced comprehension strategies students need to progress as they encounter increasingly complex texts.

This workshop includes:

Stage 3: Sharpening The Three Steps (constructing meaning)

Stage 4: The Deep 5 (Constructing Meaning) - Adding 5 of the most important comprehension strategies to the reader's toolbox to help interpret and clarify the literal meaning of sentences.
  * Visualisation, Prior Knowledge, Asking Questions, Forming Hypotheses, Making connections within text – these are all familiar but SharpReading gives them a very different treatment.

Part 1 of Sharp Reading Advanced Comprehension is a prerequisite for this workshop.

This workshop builds on constructing meaning strategies covered in PART 1. Advanced Comprehension provides students with strategies to deepen their thinking as they read, making text meaningful and memorable, providing a sound basis for analysis and evaluation of text.

WORKSHOP PART 2: STAGE 4 – 6 Consolidating the DEEP FIVE & Analysis and Evaluation of texts

SHARP READING focuses on the GUIDED READING component of your reading program. Participants explore further components of THE DEEP FIVE (Stage 4) routine for teaching the advanced comprehension strategies, and apply these to analyse and evaluate texts.

This workshop includes:

Stage 4: The Deep 5 (Constructing Meaning) – Developing the quality of the advanced comprehension strategies learned in PART 1 to deepen students’ thinking as they read.  ( Visualisation, Prior Knowledge, Asking Questions, Forming Hypotheses, Making connections within text).

Stage 5: Analysing Text (Critical Thinking) - now is the time to introduce 'big picture' or whole text thinking. The analysis of narrative and non-fiction text will be explored.
Stage 6: Evaluating Text (Critical Thinking) - once meaning has been constructed and the content analysed the reader is in the position to be able to evaluate the quality of the text.
