MAD for Languages explores tools and strategies for second language teachers to modify, adjust/accommodate and differentiate their program and approach in the classroom to meet the needs of students with learning difficulties and disabilities. This whole-day workshops aims to:

  • raise awareness and understanding data and available tools to map the literacy levels of students who are struggling, such as ABLEWA, NAPLAN, and school based assessments
  • provide an insight into the world of students with learning difficulties and suggest strategies for teaching and learning
  • explain the process of developing and implementing effective documented plans for individual students
  • reflect on own individual students and plan to modify, adjust and differentiate teaching and assessment practices to remove barriers for second language learning
  • explore the research linking second language learning and literacy development that promotes equitable access to Languages programs in schools

Kate Reitzenstein <span>(AISWA Staff)</span>

Kate Reitzenstein has worked as Consultant for Languages of the Association of Independent Schools of WA since 2014. She organises professional development activities and provides advice to schools and teachers on policy, curriculum and resources. Prior to this role, Kate worked as an Indonesian language teacher for fifteen years at three secondary schools, with experience using the Curriculum Framework and the Middle Years Program and Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. She has worked as an EFL/ESL teacher in Australia and abroad, and has had experience as an International Student Coordinator and at establishing overseas school partnerships and in-country study tours. Kate places importance on effective language teaching methodology and the need to link theory to practice in the Languages classroom.

Rebecca Delaney is an Inclusive Consultant for AISWA. Her expertise in Special and Inclusive Education has spanned over twenty five years both in the United Kingdom and Australia. Working in a variety of roles such as a specialist support assistant, teacher, tutor and Head of Department she has gained valuable training and knowledge, working alongside other professionals in Special Education. She has also experience in the field of Gifted Education and Early Childhood and has utilised this in a variety of different contexts in her career.
