Description

This professional learning session explores the features of rich tasks in language learning and will allow participants to design their own task for implementation to a specific group of learners. Rich and culminating tasks, combined with an inquiry approach, help to build confidence, connect students to the rest of the world, maximise engagement and allow for deep learning. Teachers will be encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ and their own discipline and decide on suitable assessment strategies for the task, which are often more complex than sitting a test.

The WA Curriculum is underpinned by an intercultural approach to language teaching. This approach moves away from the traditional approach, often typified by 'festivals, family, food and folktales'. Rather than treating culture separately, an intercultural approach highlights how cultural world-views and assumptions are continually enacted through language, and prompts learners to consider their own, as well as, the target language and culture.

This workshop aims to present a rationale for an intercultural approach and enable teachers to enrich their current practice by providing strategies to weave intercultural learning into every lesson.

AISWA language teachers who participate in this workshop will be provided with ongoing support and advice from the Languages Consultant to develop and refine their task and assessment strategies.

Participants will be required to bring their laptop/device.
