Using Animals in Teaching
The Animal Welfare Act 2002 requires that all use of animals for scientific purposes must be first approved by a licenced Animal Ethics Committee. Teaching is deemed to be a scientific purpose. The Schools Animal Ethics Committee (SAEC) is the nominated animal ethics committee for AISWA member schools.
Guidelines for the care and use of animals in Western Australian schools and agricultural and TAFEWA colleges (2005) was developed by the SAEC to help schools comply with the Animal Welfare Act 2002 and the National Health and Medical Research Council's Code of Practice for the care and use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (2004) 7th Edition.
